The 43rd Athens Marathon "The Authentic" fills the whole weekend. Saturday brings the Kids Run, the 5K starting on Leoforos Amalias in front of the Zappeion, and the evening Universities Night Run. Sunday brings the 10K and the Marathon itself, which starts in the town of Marathon and follows the legendary route of Pheidippides.
The main races finish inside the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) - the same stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
Whether you're running, cheering someone on, or just want to see the finish, a downtown stay puts you close to the Zappeion and the stadium without needing a car - which matters on a weekend with road closures across the centre.
